Best hiking trails in Snowdonia National Park

Gwydir Castle, Llanrwst, Conwy – in the Conwy Valley on the edge of the National Park, this route will take you via the Tudor castle and its former estate on an 8.5km moderate amble. 

Yr Eifl, Llyn Peninsular, Gwynedd – this stunning 7km circular walk boasts epic views of the Llyn, with plenty of Welsh history to discover along the way.

Snowdon, Gwynedd – nothing beats the classic hike up the country’s highest peak. It will take about five hours and can be challenging at times, but there are easier routes – such as those better suited to families (see below). 

Hiking with kids in Snowdonia National Park 

Aber Falls, Gwynedd – just over four miles long, this route passes beautiful waterfalls and magical fairylike forest. Wellies are a must for stream paddling/traversing! 

Llanbedr Woods, Gwynedd – nature loving children will be in their element on a walk through these woodlands, home to a huge variety of insects, birds and forest-dwelling creatures. 

Coed y Brenin – a favourite Snowdonia National Park trail with families the 3.5 mile route goes deep into the forest, past waterfalls, verdant riversides and torrents crashing over rocks.  

Snowdon – if heading up the main mountain is on the cards with kids, taking the Snowdon Mountain Train up to the summit so they only have to walk down is one option. Or the Rhyd-Ddu path is gentler for older children who can manage the ascent.

There’s nothing quite like the great British tradition of summer festivals, where likeminded revellers come together to dance, drink, laugh and live life to the full.

While we might be renowned in this country for our penchant for al fresco festivities, we’re also famous for our stoic attitude to the weather during festival season, seeing the party through to the end regardless of mud, rain and storms!
For festival-goers who seek a more comfortable experience however, opting for a campervan over a tent offers additional luxuries without forgoing the outdoor experience. Here are just a few reasons a VW campervan is perfect for festival or event accommodation, and what’s on this summer’s schedule to inspire a trip:

No setting up

It’s easily the worst bit of going to a British summer festival, having to park miles away from the campsite then trudge with all the necessary tent, bedding, cool boxes, clothes and a hundred other things to find a spot that’s not too close (but not too far away) from all the facilities!

Head north to The Lakes

In your hire unit you will find a copy of the Camping and Caravanning Club Privilege Guide, which lists all participating sites helping you to choose the perfect location throughout your entire journey. You can also find details of their sites on the Club website www.campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk

When you’ve selected the Club Site you’d like to stay on, all you have to do is show them the Privilege key fob, which you will find on the keys of your hire vehicle, on arrival to claim your discount.

How to Book

To guarantee your pitch it’s best to book. To Book your campsite please call the service centre on 024 7647 5426 for Club Sites or 024 7647 3008 for Camping in the Forest sites and let the advisor know that you are booking under the Privilege Scheme. A minimal deposit will be taken and upon arrival at the Club Site, your due balance will be discounted accordingly on presentation of the Privilege key fob provided. Alternatively, you can make a non-member booking online and follow the same process.

A minimal deposit is taken upon booking, and the balance will be automatically collected on the morning of the date of arrival on site.

There are many activities on offer around the lake including bird watching, boating and walks. However, one of the best ways to enjoy the beautiful scenery is to cycle round it. The 12 mile ride is very flat and suitable for all fitness abilities. Bike racks are available for hire from Wander Beyond Campervans or hire a bike there.

A short drive away is Britain’s tallest single-drop waterfall, Pistyll Rhaeadr, from here you can also explore the Berwyn Mountains and surrounding hills. Next, head into The Snowdonia National Park, 1 of only 11 dark sky reserves in the whole world for epic star glazing opportunities. For a truly magical experience, Psyched Paddleboarding will guide you on a moonlight and starry sky SUP adventure. Just imagine Paddleboarding under a full moon and star studded sky for ultimate romantic experience!

Next stop, the enchanting Italian style village of Portmeirion on the coast of North Wales. Take time to stroll round the exotic gardens, sandy beaches and stylish shops at this architectural Welsh Rivera.

Head west and you will reach Morfa Nefyn on the north coast of the Llyn Peninsula, Nefyn’s two-mile long sweep of fine sand is crescent shaped creating ideal conditions for surfers, windsurfers and kite surfers. Here you will find the Ty Coch Inn. This tiny Welsh pub was voted the third best beach bar in the world!

From here, head north to the island of Anglesey, an area of outstanding natural beauty. In the south west corner of Anglesey is Newborough beach, an extensive stretch of clean sand with fabulous views of Snowdonia. Walking across the beach you can reach the Llandwyn Island, meaning “The church of St. Dwynwen”. St. Dwynwen is the Welsh patron saint of lovers, making her the Welsh equivalent of St.Valentine, what could be more romantic!? The island has the ruins of the church, a lighthouse and some fishermen’s cottages and is cut off from the main land at high tide. Ensure to book ahead to enjoy local produce at The Marram Grass restaurant, stay at the onsite campsite and relax with a bottle of wine, knowing your campervan bedroom is waiting for you just outside!

You could easily spend a further week exploring Anglesey in the campervan, it really has so much to offer. But be sure not to miss out on the World Heritage 13th century Beaumaris Castle, before heading back on the A55 North coast road back to Chester.

Forget lying on a beach, there’s too much to do in North Wales for that! In fact, we struggled to short list the top places to visit into a week’s trip, so why not give yourself longer and experience the natural beauty of North Wales at a relaxed pace.

Chester, situated just a few miles from the Welsh boarder, makes the perfect place to start your holiday. Where else in the world could you hike, bike, paddle, climb, swim, surf, Zip wire, raft, all within an hours drive?

Suggested Itinerary

Adventure Parc Snowdonia is a fantastic day out and less than an hours drive away from Chester. Here you can surf in the world-first lagoon and only guaranteed surf break in the UK. Whether you are trying surfing for the first time or more of a pro, the consistent wave is a perfect environment to learn or fast track your skills and have loads of fun along the way. If getting wet isn’t your thing, why not try artificial caving or climbing in the indoor facilities. The menu in the Surf Side Bar & Diner is very tempting, dishes such as pizzas, burgers and pastas are made with the best local ingredients. The views over the lagoon make it the ideal place to recharge after an epic day on the waves.

Continue your journey west for approximately 50 minutes and you’ll reach the Green Coast seaside award winning beach of Rhosneigr. There are 2 sandy bays here divided by a rocky outcrop, the northerly bay being suitable for kitesurfing and the southerly beach tends to hold more appeal for surfing. This area is popular for a range of water sports including Kayaking, surfing, windsurfing, kite boarding and boating. The village of Rhosneigr is a few minutes walk away from the beach and has plenty of facilities such as cafes, shops and pubs.

Llanberis, in the Snowdonia National Park is about a 30 minute drive from Rhosneigr and is the highest mountain in England and Wales. The landscape here is truly wild, with dramatic peaks rising high above the deep valleys, it really is a paradise for hikers. Choose from eight routes to conquer this 3560 feet giant depending on how much of a challenge you like. The hardest being the grade 1 scramble of Crib Goch to the steady gradient of Llanberis Path, but all routes have tremendous scenery and breathtaking views along the way.

Abersoch is the next suggested stop and an ideal destination for anybody looking for adventure on the water. One sport Abersoch has really made their own is wakeboarding, the sport has become increasingly popular over the last few years and they even hold an annual wakeboarding festival called Wakestock.

Zip World Fforest is close to the Snowdonia village of Betws-y-Coed and offers a host of forest adventures

Fun for families

Aside from the many natural wonders for children to enjoy, including beaches, waterfalls and forests, there’s a great variety of family-friendly attractions on the Snowdonia 360 too; something to keep in mind for wetter days when the coast isn’t calling. The Welsh Mountain Zoo and Anglesey Sea Zoo are just the ticket for animal lovers, or kids can burn off some energy at Greenwood Family Park and Gypsy Wood Family Park. Or if a day in the warm and dry is needed then The Fun Centre is the place to visit.

The iconic Great Orme Tramway is another romantic stop-off on the Snowdonia 360. First opened in 1902, it is now the UK’s only funicular tramway that journeys along public roads. Travelling a mile through the Great Orme Country Park to the stunning summit, a trip on the tramway is a unique experience. 

For a local lunch or dinner, the three Dylan’s restaurants champion Welsh produce, making them a superb way to get a taste for the region. Think Menai mussels washed down with a sparkling wine from the Conwy Valley.
